Reading is pure bliss, a stress buster. In the short life that we live, reading is a way to understand what’s going inside the mind of others both literally and figuratively. Still need reasons to read books? Here’s my five reasons:
Becoming Smart Bill gates reads lots of books every year. So does Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet and Elon Musk. We want their wealth and smarts without their pain, if you think reading is pain. Books are written by their domain experts who might have experience of twenty years or so in the field. Books are an amazing opportunity to absorb that knowledge. This is how we collect smarts – reading books.
Exercise Did your nerves go cold at the sound of the word, “exercise.” I know most of us are very bad at exercise. Reading is to the mind what physical exercise is to the body. You do not want rust to deposit on those grey cells of yours, do you?
Writing and articulation A few most talented of the authors have their own way with writing. Rest learn it from those others who own writing styles. What better way to learn writing styles than by reading books by the authors you admire? I do not know how much true it is, but there are words in the wild that a poor reader makes a poor author. I feel the rumor is true and do my best to avert it.
Not just bigger but better vocabulary This is kind of a vicious circle. A better vocabulary leads to better understanding of what we read. And, the more we read the better our vocabulary gets if we take some pain looking up the difficult words we stumble upon. Reading also boosts the impression of words you have recently added to your vocabulary when you see them in use. Thus, reading gives better understanding of words their usage, connotation than a dictionary look up. If you’re a writer a bigger vocabulary means you can describe similar events in different fashion and bore you audience your audience less. Did you ever envy a guy with a rich vocabulary? Now is your chance.
Fire up your imaginations. If you’re a creative person you might have experienced those moments, “I am not creative anymore.” It’s perfectly normal; most of us do. Reading has been show to boost creativity of readers. Reading “A Song Of Ice And Fire” takes you centuries back whereas science fictions take your centuries ahead. I say, read books and fire up your imaginations.
P.S. People who read are sexy.
