The book starts with Fudge (the ex-president of Ministry of Magic) and Scrimgeour (the president of Ministry of Magic), discussing the rise of the Voldemort and how there might be a war when you-know-who is successful in collecting his army. They then go for a visit to Prime Minister of Muggles to alert them about the problems. On the other part of the world, Narcissa and Bellatrix are standing outside Severus Snapes’ house. They have quite a discussion and then Snape agrees to take “The Unbreakable Vow” to help Draco when he has to fulfill the Dark Lord’s wishes.
Harry was having a sleep when Albus Dumbledore, the Hogwarts Professor appears at his house. Uncle Vernon is mad however Dumbledore keeps him calm. He then explains Harry about Sirius’s will and Kreacher being his house-elf. They, then leave for meeting Horace Slughorn, one of the ex-professor of Hogwarts. He had been denying coming back to Hogwarts but after meeting Harry he agrees to come back. After the confirmation, Harry and Dumbledore Apparate to the Burrow. Harry meets his best friends and they celebrate their achievement for being the N.E.W.T students.
They visit Diagon Alley to see the twins store and also to buy their needed supply for the class. There then, Harry sees Draco in Borgin and Burkes shouting about something and since then he starts doubting that Draco is working for Voldemort. Harry then pays more attention to Draco’s every detail of work. The school surprises with new dramas as Ron starts dating Lavender Brown that creates a rift between her and Ron. Meanwhile, Harry also realizes that he has feelings for Ginny, Ron’s little sister.
Professor Snape takes the Defense Against the Dark Arts, the subject he wanted so badly since the beginning. He then continues to create trouble for Harry. Professor Horace Slughorn, however, takes the potion subject. Even having lesser marks Harry is allowed to Take Potion class and that is where he finds the Half-blood Princes’ book. With the help of the book, he starts aching the entire potion making and becomes the favorite student of Professor Slughorn. Throughout the year a number of tragedies take place and everyone is counting on the possibilities of Dark Lord having made people do this. Harry was busy with looking around Draco and mentoring the Quidditch team.
In the beginning, if the school year, Dumbledore decides that Harry needs better education, which is why he himself starts giving him private lessons. The private lesson consists of knowing more about Dark Lord, about how he evolved into being the Lord. Through the Pensieve (a bowl with full of memories stored) they travel through moment Dumbledore met Tom Riddle, the real name of Lord. He explains Harry about how he collected those memories and he also mentions that Professor Slughorn, who has intentionally erased the memory that would be the biggest piece to solve the puzzle. But getting the memory from Slughorn becomes one hell of a difficult task. During one of the Potion classes, Harry earned a good luck potion called Felix Felicis. When all his ideas and steps ran out he used that to get the memory from Slughorn. After he drinks it, his instinct becomes stronger and everything works as he wanted. Finally, he was able to take the memory from Slughorn.
Dumbledore and Harry travel into that memory where they find out how Tom Riddle had learned aboutHorcruxes. A Horcrux is a powerful Dark Magic that allows the soul to be divided, giving its owner the ability to become immortal.
After getting out of the memory Dumbledore finds out that Voldemort has divided his soul into seven divisions and stored it in a different object. Dumbledore guesses the place and explains it to Harry that it is the only way to destroy Voldemort. After that, it becomes Harry’s mission of life. Among seven Horcruxes, Harry destroyed one in the Chamber of Secrets, the diary where Ginny wrote her heart out.
Then, both Harry and Dumbledore went to the cave to find another Horcrux. With a lot of difficulties, they find it and return back to the Diagon Alley. However, at their arrival they find the Death Eaters sign lingering on the Hogwarts sky. Dumbledore and Harry fly to the tower over which the Dark Mark lingers, they discover that the Dark Mark is a trap intended to lure Dumbledore to that very tower. When they reach they hear people fighting downstairs and Dumbledore takes this chance to hide Harry and make him paralyzed and mute for few moments.
Draco comes running to the place where Dumbledore was. But he had been nervous about this since the beginning and he stands there shaking pointing the wand at Dumbledore. Other Death Eaters keep motivating Draco to do it but Draco stands stunned. Then Snape comes in and kills Dumbledore. Dumbledore falls off the edge of the tower and dies. Harry is overwhelmed by the scene and runs behind Snape to kill him. But he doesn’t succeed so he comes back to where Dumbledore was. Then the whole faculty decides to close Hogwarts.
As per Dumbledore’s wish, he is buried on the school grounds. Everyone attends the funeral of the Minister of Magic, to the mermaids in the lake, to the centaurs in the forest. Even in grief, Harry knows what he must do next. He promises to hunt Voldemort down and destroy each one of his Horcruxes. Ron and Hermione swear to follow and support Harry no matter what. Harry is left with a heavy heart and yet thankful that his friends are standing with him.
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” Because this book talks more about how Tom Riddle became Lord Voldemort. The above quote and saying perfectly fits the scenario. It doesn’t matter where you’re born or what you’re born but what you make yourself out of life you have, is what makes a difference. Harry and Voldemort had the same strength yet one used it for destruction while another used it for construction.
