Tea, for reasons unknown, this term makes me think of rain and the raindrops bouncing off on the slab of my veranda. Maybe it is the earthy element of tea that makes me think about it and have the above image projected every time i hear that word. Regardless, tea being served in cups of clay is a tea lover’s treat. And to have that in reality and not just as a figment of my imagination is well..amazing.
This treat has a name as amazing as the idea : ‘Matka‘. While in conversation with Roshan Dhwoj basnet, the co-founder of matka we came across the journey of both the co-founder and the product itself. Kicked off his career in the radio which he is still continuing, Roshan has been contributing and deploying his sills onto numerous industries. As mentioned the radio was and is there, along with that, he has worked as an IT officer. Co-founded a business consultancy by the name of “Media Arc Inc” with his work colleague; he also has worked as a graphic designer for a good period of time. To change the way hostels were being operated he is also running a girls hostel by the name of “Saraswati Girls Hostel”. Roshan is the guy who likes to present things differently breaking all the norms followed earlier he believes in creativity and lives by it. Currently involved in “Sambriddhi Foundation”, an economic research think-tank and “Matka” let’s get to know him a little tea bit better.
A person being soaked into numerous industries, “Matka” has been a dream to both Roshan and Prakash, the co-founders of Matka. The idea itself was very simple which is that of selling tea in a clay cup but the value that it would create to the customers and all the people behind the brand was much bigger which drove them continuously to pursue this idea and find ways to turn it into a reality. But no growth is possible without constant struggle and the effort put to subside it. Matka‘s journey has been no less. From finding the space to getting the cups every step has steeper than the previous. For any product or service to be consumed well it needs to have a good space and since, for now, Matka is in Kathmandu we all know the struggle behind finding that right place which somehow matches with that mental image of your dreamed space. It took these co-founders 4 months just to find that space which was acceptable to them with a few compromises here and there. Because, Matka had been delayed for some time they were partly frustrated as that simple idea was executed and mostly because of the space but the consolation factor was that the value they were trying to create was still theirs to execute.
After finding the space, being a start-up with limited resources (human and financial) setting up the shop was the next big thing for these two. Two more months to get that interior right. Things now have started to seem like a breeze or so they thought. On the search for clay cup producers they spent several days in Bhaktapaur and other different places only to know that all those producers have now shut their businesses. Finally after days of searching they got what they had searched for. The journey has not been easy but it definitely has been worth it, says Roshan. Now, there are other places that will serve you tea but Matka has that “something something” in their tea; well, its inexplicable. Roshan as mentioned before has been working in many industries and if anything that is common between all of this is food and tea; himself being a tea lover he found a huge gap between the quality of the tea and the price he was paying it for which is why you are guaranteed to enjoy Matka as he has managed to bridge that gap by providing what we can say, “one of the best teas we’ve ever had.” To the tea enthusiast and the flavored tea lovers out there, yes Matka does serve flavored tea with a couple of other add-ons. What are those? Find out for yourself.
Roshan in our talk had expressed how hard it is to create, sustain and manage business in Nepal but “it is hard” is no excuse to quit and turn your back on the idea that you want to execute he adds. He, himself had this mentality of working for yourself and not for others in him like many other young folks of today but the one thing that he has gained through working endless hours in numerous places is that he has gained multiple perspective build a network of like-minded people both which are really important when you are in your own way to execute “THAT” idea of yours and would like to suggest people the same. While the goals for everyone and every venture is different out there Matka hopes to achieve the recognition and build a brand, a relate-able brand to the mass regardless of the demographics.
In pursuit of providing the best that they can, Matka has collaborated with One house solution to make an exclusive coffee srink for Matka so for all the caffeine heads out there; this is something to look out for and for those looking for opportunities you can message Matka in their facebook page and see how it goes from there. We hope it goes well and will catch you in the next one. Till then, take it easy.
